Towson State honors councilman

Howard County Councilman C. Vernon Gray, a Democrat from East Columbia, has received one of seven Distinguished Black Marylanders awards given this year by Towson State University.

Mr. Gray has served on the council since 1982, when he became the first African-American council member elected in the county. He has served as president of the Maryland Association of Counties and is on the board of the National Association of Counties.

A political science professor at Morgan State University, he is a past president of the National Conference of Black Political Scientists. He received the award Feb. 18.
