Sykesville proposes cut of 2 cents in property tax

March 15, 1996

The county is facing a tight budget, but Sykesville may have a surplus large enough to lower property taxes. The town is considering a decrease of 2 cents.

"Our target rate is 81 cents," said Mayor Jonathan S. Herman. "The town's assessed values have gone up and we are getting more money."

The Town Council is considering a change in the current rate of 83 cents per $100 of assessed value, which municipal homeowners pay. The proposal is tentative, the mayor said. The council has budget workshops scheduled to study the tax rate. A public hearing on the budget will take place in May.

Baltimore County man gets five years in bank robbery

A north Baltimore County man who was found guilty of attempted bank robbery in February was sentenced Wednesday Carroll Circuit Court to five years in state prison, with a recommendation that he serve the time at Patuxent Institution in Jessup, a facility that offers psychological treatment and rehabilitation.

Judge Raymond E. Beck Sr. suspended five years of his original 10-year sentence against Christopher Dean Taggart, 30, and placed him on five years of supervised probation after release from prison.

The judge also gave Taggart a three-year concurrent sentence on handgun charges, and a consecutive, but suspended, 10-year sentence for having a pipe bomb in his truck when he was arrested July 5.

Court records showed that Taggart also must forfeit a .22-caliber pistol found in his waistband soon after police arrested him for attempted robbery. Employees of Westminster Bank and Trust Co. in Gamber told police he walked into the branch office about 2 p.m. They said he abruptly left and drove away in a white 1990 Isuzu pickup.

Police saw Taggart driving the truck near Westminster a short time later and arrested him on attempted robbery charges before finding the gun and pipe bomb.
