Police make drug arrest

March 15, 1996

A Glen Burnie man was arrested on drug charges Tuesday after officers found crack cocaine on him and the prescription drug Xanax in his vehicle, county police said.

Kevin James Gaffney, 33, of the unit block of Thomas Road, was charged with possession of crack cocaine and unauthorized possession of a prescription drug, police said.

Officer Pam Davis was patrolling Furnace Branch Plaza in the 7300 block of Furnace Branch Road about 2 a.m. when she saw a purple Geo Tracker parked near the stores. As she approached, a woman got out of the passenger's side and told the officer she had been hurt at a bar and was waiting there for a ride.

Officer Davis recognized the woman as a known drug user and seller and asked if she could search her, police said. The woman consented, but Officer Davis did not find any drugs.

Meanwhile, Officers Paul W. Conner and Leroy R. Coking arrived as backup and recognized the driver of the vehicle, police said.

Officers searched the man with his consent and found seven yellow pills that appeared to be the prescription drug Xanax in a cellophane cigarette wrapper, police said. The man did not have a prescription for the pills. Officers said they also found a half-gram of a substance that tested positive for crack cocaine inside a pouch on the man's key chain.
