Man, 30, receives 17 years in carjacking

March 14, 1996

A Marriottsville man was sentenced to 17 years in state prison after pleading guilty to carjacking yesterday in Carroll Circuit Court.

Judge Francis M. Arnold originally sentenced Anthony Frank Brigandi Jr., 30, to 22 years but suspended five years and placed him on five years of supervised probation after his release.

Brigandi and another man robbed the Crown Service Station in the 6400 block of Ridge Road in Eldersburg at 12: 45 a.m. Aug. 2 and abducted attendant William Patterson, according to court records. They forced the attendant into his 1990 Toyota Corolla and drove him to Howard County where he was forced out of the car, court records said.

The men were captured the next day in New York when their car crashed after a 36-block chase through Manhattan.

Police said Brigandi and his alleged accomplice face charges in Schuylkill County, Pa., in the Aug. 3 abduction of a 72-year-old woman and her 12-year-old granddaughter.

In return for yesterday's plea, Carroll prosecutors dropped all other charges against Brigandi.

His alleged accomplice, Jerry Lee Powell, 32, of Sykesville has not been tried, records showed.
