McKee new president of Hicks & Rotner He'll be the 'rainmaker' and top administrator

Hicks & Rotner Associates Inc., the region's largest commercial real estate brokerage firm devoted exclusively to retail properties, has tapped a former Trammell Crow Co. marketing principal as its president.

The naming of Thomas B. McKee to focus on administrative responsibilities and supervise new business development at the Towson-based firm is expected to free executives Richard E. Rotner and Marc Katz to generate additional deals without the shackles of day-to-day operational duties.

"Given their experience and contacts in the industry, this is the area that provides the greatest value to the company," said Mr. McKee, 40. "My approach will be two-pronged: I'll be sort of a rainmaker, as well as the person handling the administrative duties."

The firm's move to hire Mr. McKee is similar to moves undertaken by competing brokerages KLNB Inc. and Casey & Associates Inc. within the past two years, in an effort to streamline operations and keep top executives producing rather than spending time on paperwork and related matters.

In the case of 13-year-old Hicks & Rotner, Mr. Rotner, the president and a founding partner, will assume the title of chairman.

Mr. McKee was president of Armada/Hoffler Retail Development, a shopping center development subsidiary of a Virginia construction company. He also was vice president of leasing for the Haft family-controlled Combined Properties Inc. and spent four years as a marketing principal with Trammell Crow, the Dallas-based development company that at one time was the nation's most prolific real estate builder.

Hicks & Rotner's 17 agents were involved in the leasing or sale of 3.3 million square feet of retail space in 1995 in transactions valued at $161 million. The company represents more than 60 area shopping centers.
