Short section of U.S. 1 to be widened

Lanes along a short stretch of U.S. 1 in North Laurel will be closed later this month so crews can begin a two-month road widening project, the State Highway Administration announced Friday.

Contractors will resurface and reshape the road from Wilbert Lane to Brewers Court to make a center turn lane for traffic on U.S. 1.

The distance between the two roads on U.S. 1 is little more than a tenth of a mile, but the road is busy. Drivers turning from U.S. 1 to either of the two roads cause frequent traffic backups.

Starting in mid-March, road crews will close lanes on U.S. 1 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on some nights. Signs, flags and traffic barrels will guide drivers through the construction area, Chuck Brown, an SHA spokesman, said.

Bryn Awel Corp. of Baltimore, which was awarded the $74,000 contract, expects to complete the project by early May, Mr. Brown said.
