Around the house Remove grime from telephone buttons and receiver holes. Dip cotton balls in rubbing alcohol and wipe soil away.

To remove melted plastic from an appliance, unplug appliance and dab off spot with nail polish remover. Wipe area with a clean, damp cloth and dry.

Remove mildew from old books. Sprinkle on talcum powder, cornmeal or cornstarch; leave for two days; brush off.

In the garden

Re-pot root-bound house plants. Transfer plant to a clean pot that is one size larger than the old one.
