Mount pounds Monmouth, is 1 win away from NCAAs Bowie rolls in 1st round of NCAA Div. II tourney

Megan Gardiner scored 17 points to lead host Mount St. Mary's to a 74-46 victory over fifth-seeded Monmouth yesterday in the semifinals of the Northeast Conference women's basketball tournament.

The top-seeded Mountaineers (21-7) will go for their third consecutive NCAA tournament berth tomorrow at 7 p.m. against visiting St. Francis (Pa.), an 88-68 over Rider in the other semifinal. The Mount has defeated St. Francis in the final the past two years.

The Mountaineers took the lead for good with 16: 47 left in the first half. The lead reached double digits for the first time at

22-12 with 5: 48 left in the half, and the Mountaineers used a five-point run to close the half with a 34-19 lead.

Within the first four minutes of the second half, Monmouth (13-15) shaved the lead to 11 points, but came no closer. Three baskets by Keisha McCatty sparked a 14-2 run that boosted the Mount lead to 50-27.

The Mountaineers' lead never fell below 20 after that.

The Mountaineers are in the Northeast Conference championship game for the fifth straight year, having won the last three NEC tournament crowns.

Monmouth finished its season at 13-15.

Bowie State 74, Georgia College 59: Brandey Lemons scored 25 points to lead Bowie State (21-9) past Georgia College (21-9) in the opening round of the NCAA Division II South Atlantic Regional last night in Wingate, N.C.

Rashida Brooks recorded 14 points and 10 rebounds and Kimberly McCall had 10 points and 11 rebounds. Bowie State faces top-seeded Shaw in the regional semifinals today at 6 p.m.
