Officer Max Weinstein went to the mall shortly before 9 p.m. to help security officers catch a shoplifting suspect in the parking lot.
Officer Weinstein and security officers searched the woods near the B&A Trail where the man ran, but were unable to locate him. Meanwhile, security officers detained four men sitting in a car outside Macy's. The men told police the shoplifting suspect had ridden with them to the mall, but they did not know his full name, police said.
Mr. Shipps, the driver, gave police permission to search the car, and they found a small amount of what later tested positive for marijuana in a small plastic bag. Officers searched the four men and found a small bag of what later tested positive for marijuana in Mr. Harris' pants pocket, police said. As the officer took the drugs from Mr. Harris' pocket, the suspect took off, running across the parking lot and into a community behind the 7900 block of Ritchie Highway, police said.
A short time later, Officer Clarence Lee Whitlow arrested a man fitting the suspect's description in the 7900 block of Ritchie Highway.
