Last of scrap tires moved from pile in Washington Co.

March 08, 1996

SMITHSBURG -- It took nearly a year, but a pile of 425,000 scrap tires has been removed from a site near here.

The Maryland Department of the Environment said the last of the stockpiled tires recently were shredded and shipped out to be used for everything from fuel to landfill cover material.

"We are proud of this cleanup for the people of Smithsburg," Jane T. Nishida, secretary of the Maryland Department of the Environment, said Wednesday.

The tires had been stockpiled for nearly 10 years. The state ordered the $1 million cleanup nearly a year ago after fires at similar sites in West Virginia and Virginia raised fears in Washington County.
