Modell to step up name discussions Lavan named running backs coach

Because of an editing error, the Baltimore NFL team official going to New York to discuss name possibilities with NFL Properties was incorrectly identified in yesterday's editions. David Modell represented the Baltimore team.

The Sun regrets the error.

Baltimore owner Art Modell is expected to fly to New York today to apprise NFL Properties officials of meetings he has had the past week with focus groups about a name for his NFL team.

Modell said he will meet with key members of his organization next week for more discussions on a name. He has videotaped the focus group's discussions.

"It has been very interesting to watch people culling this information, and see the depth of their reactions to certain names," Modell said. "NFL Properties has done some of their own polling, and I'll take a look at some of their results. I'll share the analysis and tape with members of our organization, and we'll go from there."

Meanwhile, Baltimore coach Ted Marchibroda named Al Lavan, 50, running backs coach. That leaves two coaching openings, secondary and linebackers.

Lavan, who most recently coached running backs at the University of Washington, has coached with three NFL teams: San Francisco, running backs, 1989-90 season; Dallas, running backs, 1980-1988; Atlanta, defensive backs and special teams, 1975-76.
