Fabric store to close at Cromwell Field

The Rag Shop Fabrics & Crafts store at Cromwell Field Shopping Center in Glen Burnie is going out of business.

Tuesday, signs were on the window of the store, saying it had lost its lease and would close in April.

But William S. Berman, property manager for the center, disputed the signs.

"They didn't lose their lease. They had a lease renewal, which they decided not to exercise," said Mr. Berman. The store had a 10-year lease.

Mr. Berman said he was told by company President Michael Aaronson that the Glen Burnie shop is the only one in Maryland and that it wasn't profitable to ship goods here anymore.

Mr. Aaronson and Evan Berenzweig, senior vice president of store operations, were in Florida on business and couldn't be reached, a company secretary said.

After three days of phone calls from a reporter and questions faxed to the company at its request, Steven Barnett said the company would not comment on anything, not even the number of employees the store has. Mr. Barnett would identify himself only as an officer with the company, which is based in Hawthorne, N.J.
