New sorbets make debuts

"Yummy" was our tasters' response to six new sorbet flavors from Ben & Jerry's. You can get free samples of flavors such as Strawberry Kiwi, Purple Passion Fruit, Pina Colada, Pink Lemonade, Mocha and Doonesberry -- with carton illustrated by cartoonist Garry Trudeau -- at Ben & Jerry's Scoop shops; cartons will be in stores next month. Award-winning Boston restaurant chef Lydia Shire will be behind the stove at Linwood's/Due restaurants Tuesday night for the 5th annual Great Chef's Dinner to benefit the Child Abuse Prevention Center of Maryland. The event begin at 6:30. Tickets are $175 per person. Call (410) 576-2414, Ext. 11.

Shopping with diabetes

The new food labels, diet recommendations of the American Diabetes Association, and hands-on shopping experience are featured in a two-hour tour Giant Food is offering in 45 of its stores for people with diabetes. Registration forms are available in Giant stores, and must be postmarked by March 11. Giant will donate the $5 fee to the ADA.

Asian eating

The recipe sounds great: Savory chicken wrapped in Chinese pancakes and dipped in sauce. Problem: It calls for dried lily stems and tree ears. No clue? Turn to "Ken Hom's Asian Ingredients," by the respected cookbook author, teacher and TV chef (Ten Speed Press, $15.95). It's structured like a field guide, with pictures of the ingredients and explanations as well as recipes.
