Dieters can seek spiritual way to lose weight in church workshop

HAVE YOU ever felt that you needed Divine Intervention to lose weight? Help is on the way.

Rockland United Methodist Church at Route 99 and U.S. 29 in Ellicott City will sponsor a 12-week seminar for men and women who want to lose more than 20 pounds.

The hour workshop will be led by volunteer Shirley Bossom.

Participants will watch and discuss videos supplied by "Weigh Down Workshops."

The program, which is nondenominational, demands no

weigh-ins or calorie counting.

The orientation, at 3:30 p.m. March 9, will include an introductory videotape that will show how to lose weight.

The cost of the program is $103, which includes classes, a study guide and 12 audiotapes for support between classes.

After the workshop, begin your diet with a healthful "all-you-can-eat" soup supper, served for the benefit of Henderson Mission Settlement in Kentucky.

'Brigadoon' at Howard

The exciting music and spirited dance numbers of the classic musical "Brigadoon" will light up the stage of Howard High School at 7:30 p.m. March 7, 8, and 9.

The haunting tale involves a magical town that appears once every 100 years.

A young woman from the town and a man from the "real" world fall in love, leaving him to follow her in her town or sacrifice his love and return to our time.

The musical has five major dance numbers and the largest cast to perform at Howard High.

Korey Jackson, Kerry Nudelman, Patrick Moulding and Erin Frisby star.

Tickets cost $6 and are available at the school's front office or at the door.

Cub Scout news

On Feb. 10, the National Pike District Cub Scout Packs held the annual Chatham Mall Show and Pinewood Derby, a race among toy cars that were crafted by the boys. The results of the race are in.

The car made by Bryan Bowring of Lisbon Pack 827 won first place, David Carter made the second-place car, and Steven Scheler's car won third place.

The second- and third-place winners are in Northfield Pack 917.

Pack 917 held its Blue and Gold Banquet on Tuesday, when Packmaster Mike Joyce bridged the second year Webelos to Boy Scouts.

Bridging Cubs under Ben Mayock's leadership are Steven rTC Mayock, Peter O'Hare, David Schnorf, Ben Vassilieu, Justin Wheeler and Chris Ziesat.

Den Leader Bruce Carter's boys included David Carter, Chris Appel, Jon Trenary, Drew Warren and Seth Scheler.

Cub Scouts will be bringing around "Scouting for Food" bags, which you can fill with packaged goods and set out on a designated day.

RF The boys and their leaders are collecting for local food pantries.

Young artists

Artists in St. John's Lane Elementary School recently had their work on display in two county locations.

Firehouse pancakes

On Sunday, eat all you want at Elkridge Volunteer Fire Department's monthly Pancake Breakfast.

Pancakes will be served from 7:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., with eggs, sausage, toast and hash browns.

Tickets cost $4 for adults and $2.50 for children age 5 to 12, with children younger than 4 years eating for free.

The Fire Department is at 6275 Old Washington Road in Elkridge.

Birds, bees talk

Have you recently talked to your children about the birds and the bees?

Jennifer Blumberg, health educator at Howard County General Hospital, can offer some free tips.

"Talking With Your Kids About Sex: Oh, How Times Have Changed" will be presented at Chatham Mall in Ellicott City from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. March 5.

Library programs

Howard County library announces "Let's Go Fly a Kite," a program of stories and a kite-making craft for children age 7 and up at the Elkridge branch from 4:30 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. March 13.

Registration begins March 6.

The library also will present "Collage Creations," where children age 6 and up will explore collage as a picture book art form and create their own collage.

The program will be presented at the Elkridge branch from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. March 5.

Registration begins tomorrow.

"Collage Creations" will be presented at the Miller branch from 4:30 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. March 11 and from 10:30 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. March 16.

Registration begins March 5.
