A convicted child molester was held without bail yesterday, charged with murder in the strangulation of a 9-year-old boy in a Flag House Courts public housing high-rise.

The victim, Marvin Wise Jr., was a third-grader at City Springs Elementary School. He was found dead early yesterday in a vacant apartment one story above the 11th-floor unit where he lived with his mother, Mary Williams, and two brothers.

Police said tests to determine whether the child was sexually molested were not complete.

Charged with first-degree murder was Shawn Brown, 27, who had been staying for several weeks with relatives on the 10th floor of the Exeter Street building.

Police said the suspect had been released in June from a New York State prison, where he served nine years for child molestation and attempted murder. He was held at the Southeastern Police District pending a bail review hearing today in District Court.

Homicide Detective Homer Pennington said the boy left his apartment about 6 p.m. Saturday to visit a girl in the apartment where the suspect was staying.

He said the boy often visited friends in the building, staying for several hours, so the mother did not report him missing.

About 2:10 a.m., a Wells Fargo security officer making his rounds found the boy's body in a vacant, trash-strewn apartment.
