Salisbury State and St. Mary's take openers CAC men's tournament

Bill Lancaster scored 22 points to lead five players in double figures as host second-seeded Salisbury State defeated seventh-seeded Gallaudet, 97-74, in the opening round of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament. The Sea Gulls (17-8), who extended their winning streak to 10 straight, advance to tomorrow's semifinal round and will be host to St. Mary's.

Salisbury State shot 54 percent from the field in the first half to open a 43-28 halftime advantage. Gallaudet (6-19) pulled to within nine points in the second half, but never got closer.

Casey Musick added 15 for Salisbury, and Craig Blackmon added 14. The Sea Gulls forced 34 turnovers and made 22 steals.

* St. Mary's 87, Goucher 79: Barry Friedman scored 25 points as sixth-seeded St. Mary's (8-16) upset host third-seeded Goucher (15-10) in an opening-round game. St. Mary's converted 31 of 36 free throws (86 percent).

Predrag Durkovic led the Gophers with 21 points and 12 rebounds. St. Mary's held Goucher to 38 percent shooting from the field (24 of 63) and forced 21 turnovers.
