Man critically injured in pickup truck crash

A 24-year-old Damascus man was in critical but stable condition at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center last night after being involved in a single-vehicle accident in Mount Airy Monday night.

Police said Douglas Nelson Poole of the 9100 block of Ore Road was riding in the bed of a 1993 Dodge Dakota pickup about 8 p.m. Monday when the driver, Sean Thomas Johnston, lost control.

According to police reports, Mr. Johnston had been driving north on Buffalo Road when the truck spun around several times, finally coming to rest against a tree.

Police said Mr. Johnston, 18 of the 9800 block of Church Road in Damascus, was not injured in the accident.

A second passenger, 16-year-old Rachel Page Rodbell of the 13600 block of Lexington Drive in Mount Airy, was treated and released from Frederick Memorial Hospital Monday night. She was riding in the front seat, police said.

Police said their investigation of the accident is continuing.

Mount Airy man, 86, dies from auto crash injuries

An 86-year-old Mount Airy man involved in a car accident last week died of his injuries at Frederick Memorial Hospital Monday morning.

Police said John Albert Phoebus Sr. was driving his 1989 Chevrolet Cavalier east on Penn Shop Road around 12:30 p.m. Feb. 14 when he stopped to make a left turn into a private driveway.

According to police, Mr. Phoebus drove in front of a 1988 Toyota pickup truck driven by James Edward McPherson, 45, of Mount Airy. Police said the two cars collided head-on.

Mr. Phoebus died about 7:30 a.m. Monday at the hospital.

Little League registration scheduled for Friday

The Four County Little League will have registration for baseball and girls' fast-pitch softball from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and again March 15 at Twin Ridge Elementary School in Mount Airy.

Baseball is for 6- to 18-year-olds, with a 13-year-old only baseball team. Girls' fast-pitch softball is for 9- to 12-year-olds.

The cost is $45 for the first child, $35 for the second child and family rates for more than two children.

Children will play a regular season, post-season and tournaments.
