Astros: Agreed to terms with IF Ray Holbert and P Kevin Gallaher.

Blue Jays: Signed IF Miguel Cairo and P Giovanni Cararra.

Braves: Agreed to terms with 3B Chipper Jones on four-year contract with option for fifth year. Lost arbitration case with P Steve Avery (7-13, 4.67 ERA), who will earn $4.2 million rather than club's offer of $3.6 million.

Dodgers: Signed P Mike Harkey to minor-league contract.

Expos: Signed P Tim Scott (2-0 in team-high 62 games) to one-year contract.

Giants: Agreed to terms with P Jamie Brewington and P Shawn Estes.

Indians: Signed OF Tom Marsh to minor-league contract.

Mets: Signed OF Gary Varsho to minor-league contract. Agreed to terms with IF Edgardo Alfonzo and C Alberto Castillo.

Rangers: Won arbitration case with C Ivan Rodriguez (.303, 12 HRs, 67 RBIs), who will earn $4 million, rather than the $4.95 million he had sought. P Joe Hesketh decided not to pitch in 1996.

Red Sox: Signed 1B Mo Vaughn to three-year contract with dual option for fourth year. Signed P Stan Belinda to one-year contract. Lost arbitration case with P Mike Stanton (1-0, 3.00 ERA in 22 games after being acquired from Braves), who will make $1.75 million, rather than club's offer of $1.2 million.

Basketball

Hornets: Signed F Pete Myers. Placed F Gerald Glass (sprained left ankle) on injured list.

Knicks: Placed F Charles Oakley (broken finger) on injured list.

Nets: Placed G Kendall Gill (fractured left index metacarpal) on injured list. Activated G Khalid Reeves from injured list.

Football

4 Bengals: Re-signed free-agent RB Anthony Daigle.

Bills: Released FB Carwell Gardner, S Chris Green, S Matt Darby and DE Karl Wilson. Tendered offers to OL Mike Devlin and CB Filmel Johnson.

Broncos: Re-signed OT Gary Zimmerman to one-year contract.

Buccaneers: Named Charlie Williams wide receivers coach and Ricky Porter offensive assistant coach.

Cardinals: Named Larry Marmie defensive backs coach and Glenn Pires linebackers coach.

Chiefs: Signed G Will Shields to six-year contract.

Dolphins: Named Larry Beightol assistant head coach/offensive line.

Falcons: Released DT Jumpy Geathers, S Kevin Ross and LB Darryl Talley.

49ers: Extended contract of S Tim McDonald through 1999.

Patriots: Named Bill Belichick assistant head coach and secondary coach. Reassigned Chris Palmer to quarterback coach and Charlie Weis to wide receiver coach. Named Maurice Carthon running backs coach. LB Todd Collins, who retired on eve of 1995 training camp, applied to NFL for reinstatement.

Redskins: Signed DT Romeo Bandison, DT Don Reynolds, T Keith Wagner, WR Alphonso Browning and T-deep snapper Ryan Kuehl.

Seahawks: Agreed to terms with DE Michael Sinclair and MLB Dean Wells.

Hockey

Lester Patrick Award: Finalists for award that honors outstanding service to hockey in the United States are George Gund, Ken Morrow and Milt Schmidt.

Canadiens: Recalled LW Scott Fraser and D David Wilkie from AHL Fredericton. Sent D Marko Kiprusoff to Fredericton.

Capitals: Sent G Olie Kolzig to AHL Portland for conditioning. Called up G Ron Tugnutt from Portland.
