February 16, 1996

A Brooklyn Park man was arrested Tuesday and charged with stealing a saw from a friend with whom he was staying, county police said.

Michael Jerome Coffey, 38, of the 5200 block of Ballman Ave. was charged with theft. He was being held in the county jail on $2,500 bond.

A neighbor tipped police to the theft about 3 p.m.

Officer T. S. Brown chased a man through an alley and to a home in the 5200 block of Ballman Ave.

The homeowner allowed Officer Brown inside, where he found the man he had pursued. The homeowner told police the man was a friend who had been living with him four months so that he could get his life straightened out.

The homeowner told police he had owned a saw, but it was gone.

His friend told police that he had pawned the saw for $20. Police arrested the man and went to the pawnshop, where the homeowner retrieved his saw, police said.
