Ferndale man beaten, cut, then robbed

A 63-year-old Ferndale man was beaten and stabbed in the throat with a foot-long piece of wood in his home yesterday by an acquaintance who then robbed him, county police said.

Rosario L. Vinci of the first block of Mapledale Road was treated and released at North Arundel Hospital.

Police said Mr. Vinci's assailant visited him shortly before midnight Tuesday and after they had been in the basement for a while, demanded money.

The man the man -- known only as John -- began to beat Mr. Vinci, threatened to kill his elderly mother, who was asleep upstairs, and again demanded money, police said.

The man then stabbed Mr. Vinci, took a videocassette recorder and ran away, police said. Police had no description of the man.

Baltimore man charged with stealing cigarettes

Police arrested a Baltimore man Tuesday and charged him with stealing four cartons of cigarettes from a Brooklyn Park supermarket, county police said.

Bobby Bernard Guest, 42, of the 2400 block of Westport St. was charged with theft.

Robert Ziegler, a manager at Whitey's Supermarket in the 800 block of Hammonds Ferry Road, told police he saw a man go to a cigarette display shortly before 4 p.m. The man took four cartons of cigarettes valued at $70 and put them into a bag, police said. The man put the bag into his jacket and left the store without paying for the items, police said.

Mr. Ziegler chased the man and held him for police.
