Migliara/Kaplan Associates, a health-care market research firm in Owings Mills, has been purchased by NFO Research of Greenwich, Conn., a general market research company.

There are no plans to move any of Migliara/Kaplan's 70 employees in Owings Mills and 12 employees in New Jersey, a company spokeswoman said.

Sixteen of the 20 largest pharmaceutical firms in the country are among the clients of the 15-year-old Migliara/Kaplan, which specializes in market research for new product development. It has also worked for a number of leading diagnostic and medical device companies.

NFO also acquired a sister company, Chesapeake Surveys Inc., which provides survey research and focus groups to support Migliara/Kaplan's market research. NFO bought Migliara/Kaplan and Chesapeake Surveys for $15.2 million in cash and stock, of which $3.75 million is payable based on Migliara/Kaplan's earnings over the next three years.

Founders Joseph Migliara and Harris Kaplan previously worked in marketing and research for Becton Dickinson, the New Jersey-based medical supply company with operations in Maryland.
