Barry takes flight, wins Slam Dunk event

February 11, 1996|By Jerry Bembry

SAN ANTONIO -- As Los Angeles Clippers guard Brent Barry raced from one end of the court to the other, visions of Julius Erving and Michael Jordan came to mind. Those were the only ones to take off from the foul line in the slam-dunk competition.

But Barry did just that -- twice -- in winning the 1996 Slam Dunk event at the NBA's All-Star Weekend. Barry's foul-line dunk in the final round earned a score of 49.0, beating the Suns' Michael Finley (46.2).
