Bel Air claims Harford Co. girls crown

Best friends Katy Novotny and Jodi Encapera were the individual headliners, and Bel Air won the team title at the girls division of the 17th annual Harford County swimming championships at Magnolia Middle School last night.

Novotny, a Fallston junior, who had three meet records in her previous two years, lowered one of them in Tuesday's trials, and another in the finals.

She dropped her 100 freestyle time to 52.44 seconds (trials), won the final easily in 53.07, then came back to take the 100 backstroke, 59.66.

Encapera, a John Carroll sophomore, had a much better meet than a year ago, when she actually qualified for the 100 butterfly final with a cast on her broken left foot. This time, she equaled the meet record in the 200 freestyle (1:57.13), then missed the standard in the 100 butterfly by .02.

Novotny, who admitted to pre-meet pressure because she was expected to do well, also picked up relay golds in the 200 medley and 400 freestyle. She topped off a meet-record performance in the 400 (3:47.02). Encapera added a third gold, anchoring the Patriots' 200 free relay.

Tonight, Fallston (boys) and Bel Air (overall team) will be the defenders.
