Brawl at end mars win by Coppin women

February 09, 1996|By FROM STAFF REPORTS

The Coppin State-Bethune Cookman women's basketball game ended with a brawl while the Eagles were at midcourt celebrating their 70-63 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference victory.

"We're going to investigate the situation and file a report with the MEAC commissioner [Ken Free] to see if any judicial action is justified," said Coppin athletic director Clayton McNeill. "I'm also going to confer with Bethune's athletic director, Len Thompson, to guard against this ever happening again."

At first, it appeared the visitors were coming to congratulate Coppin. But the players began to shove each other, and then the swinging started. Several players were thrown to the court as security police tried to separate the teams.

The game officials had left the floor and did not witness the fight.

"I'm in total shock," said Coppin coach Tori Harrison. "It's a shame you have to win a game and then have it end that way. But they started pushing my players, and my girls had to defend themselves."

Bethune-Cookman coach Alvin Wyatt, appearing extremely upset, said, "It didn't happen as far as I'm concerned. I didn't see anything."
