A 38-year-old trash crew worker was killed yesterday when he slipped on an icy street in Ellicott City and was run over by the truck from which he had been working, police said.

The name of the victim, a Baltimore man, and the name of the 51-year-old truck driver were being withheld late yesterday, pending notification of the victim's family.

The accident took place about 2:40 p.m. as three members of a truck crew with C & S Faulkner Inc. of Hanover collected trash in the 8500 block of Timber Hill Court, a 16-unit townhouse complex in Ellicott City's Autumn Crest neighborhood.

The truck's driver, a 15-year veteran with C & S Faulkner, was moving the truck to the next pickup location when the victim slipped and fell under the wheels of the truck, suffering head injuries, Howard County police said.

The third crew member had run ahead of the truck to the next stop.

The victim, a two-year employee of C & S Faulkner, was pronounced dead at the scene by forensic specialists from the State Medical Examiner's Office.

"Unfortunately, I don't have the authority to say it's too slippery out to do pickups," said Tirso R. Martinez, vice president of the 37-year-old waste disposal company. "Nobody is at fault here. It's just an accident, a very tragic one."

No charges have been filed. County police are investigating.
