25 years ago (week of Jan. 31-Feb. 6, 1971):

Howard County became the second locality in the United States to pass a bill banning the sale of non-returnable beverage containers.

50 years ago (week of Jan. 27-Feb. 2, 1946):

The Kiwanis Club announced its annual Hog Essay Contest, open to boys and girls living on Howard County farms. A pair of pure-bred hogs would be awarded to the contest winner.

J. W. Spaulding, owner of the Spaulding Garage, announced the opening of a second establishment in the Woodbine area. Both facilities sold and serviced tractors and other farm machinery.
