Around the house

* Remove soiled spots on wallpaper with a soft, stale piece of bread.

* Help prevent mildew in shower area. Mix a solution of 1-part bleach to 5-parts water in a clean, empty plastic spray bottle. Periodically, spray tub and tile surfaces with bleach mixture, let sit, and rinse with water.

* Save energy. Avoid opening oven door when baking over a period of time. Each peek causes the oven temperature to drop 25 to 50 degrees.

* During inclement weather, shake soiled dust mops inside a paper grocery bag or a plastic trash bag that has been secured at the end.

* Use long-life electric bulbs in places that do not require a high concentration of light -- such as hallways and closets. These bulbs produce fewer lumens per watt than do standard bulbs.

In the garden

* Save old spice jars and tops to store seeds for this year's garden. The perforated plastic tops will allow you to shake out seeds evenly for better sowing.
