Navy women's captain suspended for season

January 31, 1996

The Naval Academy women's basketball team, already devastated by season-ending knee injuries to starters Becky Dowling and Jenny Thompson, suffered another blow yesterday when leading scorer Adria Schneck was suspended for the rest of the season.

Lt. j.g. Scott Allen, assistant public affairs officer, said Schneck, the team captain, was suspended for "violations of the administrative disciplinary act." The academy does not specify violations of its code.

Schneck will remain in school and continue to attend classes.

Schneck, a 6-foot junior forward and an All-Patriot League choice last season, was averaging 20.5 points and 7.7 rebounds. She was the principal reason Navy got off to a 10-0 start.

But when Dowling, who was averaging 18.1 points and 9.1 rebounds, and Thompson, an effective shooting guard, were injured last month, Navy began to tumble. It has lost four of its past nine.
