Name that baby

Names and Places Inc. has just released a software product that gives expectant parents a new way to search for the perfect baby name. Namease is a Windows-based program that allows users to search through more than 12,500 names by specific characteristics, such as "all two-syllable names beginning with the letter J" or by popularity rankings. The program, which is available for $19.95, also gives general information about names, such as origin and meaning. To order, call (800) 295-4080.

For tidier diapers

If you already have your bundle of joy, you may find the Diaper Genie from Mondial Industries helpful. The plastic cylindrical container, approximately 17 inches by 10 inches, seals and stores up to 20 diapers before it needs emptying. The diapers are sealed in a chain of odorless plastic film that's easy to dispose of and which wraps up to 180 diapers before it needs to be changed. The Diaper Genie, retailing for $29.95, is available -- at baby stores nationwide and at discount retailers, including Wal-Mart, Kmart and Sears.

Once you're past the baby-naming and diaper stage, you enter into the mystical world of childhood traditions. Local seamstress Colleen Wooten has created special pillows to be used during those visits that the tooth fairy makes to sleeping children. Each lace-edged pillow has a small pocket on the reverse side where a tooth easily can be placed and then replaced by a gift. Each pillow is $15, including shipping and handling. Call Pillows Unlimited at (410) 768-8817.

Doodle-A-Go-Go may be just the thing to keep children entertained in situations that require their being quiet and still. This portable drawing board, from Decorator House Inc., comes with a removable supply box attached to the top of the board. The design of the box prevents crayons and pens from spilling all over the car or couch, and a cut-out handle at the bottom makes Doodle-A-Go-Go easy to carry. A gripper elastic band holds the 50-sheet drawing pad tightly in place. Doodle-A-Go-Go sells for $11.99. Call (800) 527-5197 to order.
