Police arrested a woman and a man on drug and weapons charges Tuesday after an officer found contraband in their car, county police said.

Officer Eric Burns said he was traveling west on Interstate 695 in Ferndale about 12:45 a.m. when he saw a car that appeared to be speeding, police said. He pulled the car over after clocking it at 70 mph, police said.

Officer Burns saw several plastic bags of the type often used to package drugs on the floor on the driver's side and a knife in the woman's purse, police said.

He called for backup and ordered the woman and a male passenger out of the car, police said.

A computer check showed the woman was named in an outstanding warrant on a December theft charge, police said.

Tests showed plastic bags from the car contained cocaine residue or cocaine, police said.

Officers also found a loaded, sawed-off shotgun in the car trunk. The man told officers he owned the shotgun, police said.

Deborah Nicole Grooms, 21, of the 8000 block of Gough St. and Ron T. Brown, 20, of the first block of E. Cedar Hill Lane were charged with possession of cocaine, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a deadly weapon and possession of a short-barreled shotgun.
