Man charged in sexual assault and imprisonment of woman

January 23, 1996

County police arrested a 44-year-old man yesterday on charges of sexually assaulting a woman and holding her prisoner in her room at a Laurel motel.

A 20-year-old woman told police she heard a man banging on doors at the Motel 6 in the 3500 block of Old Annapolis Road in Laurel about 5 a.m. When she answered her door, the man entered the room with a knife and began fondling her and threatening to kill her, police said.

The man told the woman to get dressed because he was going to take her to the Knights Inn in the 3300 block of Fort Meade Road and sell her for $500.

As they were leaving the room, the woman broke free, ran to the motel office to call police and the man ran, police said. Officers found the man in a room at the Knights Inn and returned him to the Motel 6 where the woman identified him, police said.

Joseph Gibson, 44, of no fixed address, was charged with false imprisonment, reckless endangerment, assault and battery, and a fourth-degree sex offense.
