PHILADELPHIA -- Severna Park High's Joyce Stefancik was named high school Division I Coach of the Year last night at the National Soccer Coaches Association of America convention.

"I'm breathless," said Stefancik, who started the girls program 17 years ago. "The secret to success is to surround yourself with good people: players, parents, assistant coaches. This is what it leads to."

The Falcons went 16-1-2 last fall en route to the school's fourth Class 4A Maryland state title.

April Heinrichs, the University of Maryland women's coach who last week moved to the University of Virginia, was named the senior college women's Division I Middle Atlantic Coach of the Year.

Tom Wall of Essex CC was named the Junior College Division I men's East Region's top coach. Montgomery-Rockville's Tom Bichy earned Division II honors. And Centennial's Bill Stara was named best coach in high school boys Division I.
