A man asked for a room and paid for it before robbing a North Laurel motel at gunpoint Wednesday afternoon, Howard County police said.

The robber escaped with about $350 in cash. The clerk at whom he pointed the gun, a 54-year-old Laurel woman, was not injured, police said.

The holdup occurred about 5 p.m. at the Turf Motel in the 9800 block of Washington Blvd. While the clerk was making room arrangements for the man, he went behind the counter, displayed a dark handgun and ordered her into an office bathroom, police said. He took the cash from the register before fleeing in a gray, older-model car with Maryland license tags, officers said.

The robber was described as a 6-foot-tall black male, 20 to 25 years old, wearing a dark sweat suit and a dark knit hat.

Anyone with information should call Howard County police at 313-2220 or the Metro Crime Stoppers hot line at 276-8888 to qualify for a $2,000 reward.
