Exam shows McDonald is healthy, agent says

January 18, 1996|By Brad Snyder

Several teams -- most notably the Milwaukee Brewers -- have expressed interest in Ben McDonald, especially after a doctor recently gave McDonald a clean bill of health, according to McDonald's agent, Scott Boras.

Dr. Lewis Yocum, a California orthopedist, examined McDonald five days ago and deemed that McDonald's right shoulder has made a full recovery, Boras said. Even though there is little chance McDonald will return to the Orioles, Boras said he called owner Peter Angelos and sent him a copy of the medical report "out of courtesy."

"I know the Orioles aren't going to sign Ben," he said. "But they've invested a lot of money in him."

The team's former No. 1 pick, who made $4.5 million last season but won only three games, turned down the Orioles' $2.8 million offer. The Orioles have said they completed their starting rotation by trading for David Wells.
