Winter weather changes date of AACC spring commencement

For the third consecutive year, Anne Arundel Community College's spring commencement has been rescheduled because of the weather.

With the start of spring classes delayed, the graduation ceremony has been moved from May 23 to May 29. School officials made the change to accommodate the revised spring schedule. Officials do not expect the new date to cause problems for anyone who plans to graduate.

Last week's snows also forced the cancellation of several days of minisession classes at the Arnold campus. With the exception of Allied Health Program students, who will start laboratory programs as scheduled Monday, the start of the semester has been pushed to Jan. 29.

Ice storms in 1994 forced school officials to reschedule spring commencement, spokeswoman Debbie Shaughney said. Last spring, bad weather prompted the school to hold two commencements. Steady, heavy rain and reports of lightning cut the May 25 ceremony short. Commencement was rescheduled for June 13 so that graduates could walk across the stage and the valedictorians could give their full speeches.

School snow days

County school students have lost only two days of instruction, even though they were out of school for six days. The school system had built four snow days into its calendar, said Superintendent Carol S. Parham. No decision has been made on how to make up the two days, she said.

The snow days forced the cancellation of last week's school board meeting, where Dr. Parham was to unveil her proposed budget for the next fiscal year. The meeting has been rescheduled for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday -- a date previously set as a budget workshop for the school board.

A budget workshop is scheduled for Jan. 30.

"We will have to commit that one to instructional issues," said Joseph Foster, board president.

He did not know if board members would have time for a second budget workshop. Budget adoption has been scheduled for the Feb. 21 board meeting.

Registration extended

At the community college, registration for Term 1 and Term 2 classes has been extended through Jan. 27. Late fees have been waived through Feb. 5. For registration information, call 541-2246.

Term 3 classes will begin April 1 instead of March 26. Final exams are scheduled for May 15-21. The changes do not affect the May 17-24 spring break or noncredit continuing education classes.

Financial aid seminars have been scheduled for Saturday and Feb. 3. For information, call 541-2203.

Snow cleanup

County residents with complaints about road conditions or plowing problems can call the road operations office at 222-7045 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays.

Cleanup from the snowstorms will cost Anne Arundel County at least $1 million. The county will seek federal disaster reimbursement, said Lisa I. Ritter, a spokeswoman for County Executive John G. Gary.
