Escape to the beach

Today's TV

January 09, 1996|By Chris Kaltenbach | Chris Kaltenbach,SUN STAFF

How did people survive snowstorms before television? Heck, when you've been locked inside your house for a couple of days, even the soap operas start to look good. Fortunately, there's enough on today that you won't have to resort to such desperate viewing measures.

* "Baywatch" (6 p.m.-7 p.m., WNUV, Channel 54) -- Who cares what this episode is about? There's 500 feet of snow on the ground outside, and right there on your TV tube are truckloads of beautiful people in swimsuits, cavorting on the beach.

* "Demolition Man" (8 p.m.-10 p.m., WBFF, Channel 45) -- This sci-fi yarn about a pair of enemies who carry their grudge across the centuries stars one of the most insufferable stars in Hollywood. But it's also an early effort from America's sweetheart. The two actors are Sandra Bullock and Sylvester Stallone. I'll let you decide which is which. Fox.

* "Frasier" (9 p.m.-9:30 p.m., WBAL, Channel 11) -- The romance between Dr. Crane and station manager Kate Costas is torn asunder, although not for the reasons you might expect. Mercedes Ruehl guest stars for the last time. NBC.

Cable

* "Charlie's Angels" (1 p.m.-2 p.m., TNT) -- The Angels go on a cruise. Call me crazy, but I have a hunch some swimsuits may be involved.

* "The Bridge on The River Kwai" (1:45 p.m.-4:30 p.m., Showtime) -- A wonderful film about dignity, the human spirit and a plot to blow up this neat-looking bridge in the middle of a jungle (cool!), this film's biggest selling point today may be it's length, nearly three hours. If three days of being snowbound has you about to go crazy from cabin fever, this may be just the ticket. Added bonus: The theme music should keep you humming for at least a few days.

* "Change of Habit" (4 p.m.-6 p.m., TNT) -- Elvis Presley falls for Mary Tyler Moore. Only problem is, Mary's a nun. Only in Hollywood

* "Dream On" (10 p.m.-10:30 p.m., Comedy Central) -- OK you "Friends" lovers, here's another chance to find out what they were doing before they started hanging out together.

Courteney Cox guest stars as a banquet guest being pursued by two of the series' regulars, Martin and Eddie.

* "Another 48 Hours" (2:45 a.m.-4:25 a.m., HBO) -- The makers of "48 Hours" should have quit while they were ahead. Just because they didn't doesn't mean you have to watch the results. Don't bother.
