Notre Dame gets past Washington Gators win, 49-47, in Catholic Classic

Tinah Houck scored off an inbounds pass from Emily Yanero with one second left to lift the College of Notre Dame to a 49-47 victory over Washington College in the first round of the Catholic University Classic yesterday. Houck (Westminster) had 16 points, seven rebounds and three blocks for the Gators (5-3), who play Catholic in the championship today.

Washington (4-4) had overcome a 12-point deficit to take its first lead of the game at 47-45 when Kristen Snell scored with 57 seconds left. Jennifer Chaney (16 points) then scored for Notre Dame to tie it at 47.

Yanero, who had the game-winning assist, led the Gators with 12 rebounds and six assists.

* Mount St. Mary's 89, Long Island U. 55: Nikki Schroyer and Keisha McCatty each scored 16 points as Mount St. Mary's (5-4, 2-0 in the Northeast Conference) routed visiting Long Island University (3-6, 0-2). The Mountaineers shot 54 percent (19 of 35) in the first half to take a 43-23 halftime lead.

* UMBC 70, Winthrop 54: Kendra Damann scored 25 points as UMBC (3-7, 1-0 in the Big South) downed host Winthrop (1-7, 0-1).

* Coppin St. 78, North Carolina A&T 59: Natasha Parks scored a career-best 31 points to help host Coppin State (3-6, 1-0 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) over North Carolina A&T (5-4, 0-1).

* Goucher 80, Salisbury State 56: Chanon Watson scored 22 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as Goucher (5-4, 1-0 in the Capital Athletic Conference) topped visiting Salisbury State (6-4, 3-2). Amy Cooke had 18 points for the Sea Gulls, who committed 23 turnovers.

* Pitt-Bradford 64, Frostburg State 62, OT: Diane Eggleton had 25 points and 13 rebounds to lead Pitt-Bradford (7-2) past host Frostburg State (6-4). Shelly Ridgeway scored 18 points for the Bobcats, who were out-rebounded 62-41.


* UMES 71, Florida A&M 66: Aaron McKinney scored 18 points and Lawrence Garrison added 13 points off the bench to lead UMES (7-5, 2-0 in the MEAC) to victory over Florida A&M (5-6, 0-1). Scientific Mapp paced the Rattlers with 18 points.

* St. Mary's 72, Manhattanville 58: Kenny Logan scored 19 points as host St. Mary's defeated Manhattanville in the first round of the Showplace Holiday tournament. The Saints, who forced 21 turnovers, play Haverford in the final today.

* St. John Fisher 92, Salisbury State 74: Theron Mong scored 20 points to help St. John Fisher (6-0) top visiting Salisbury State (3-6). Five players scored in double figures for the Sea Gulls, who were led by Eric Prendeville's 13 points.
