A 6-year-old boy was seriously injured yesterday evening when he was struck by a car in front of Long Reach Shopping Center in Columbia, Howard County rescue officials said.

The boy, whose name and condition were not available last night, was being treated at the Johns Hopkins Children's Center, said Lt. Ken Byerly, a spokesman for the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue.

The accident occurred about 5:26 p.m. on Tamar Drive near Airy Brink Lane.

The boy apparently crossed into the path of the car, rescue officials said.

Police are investigating the accident.
