A 17-year-old Edgewater boy was being held without bond yesterday on a charge of attempted first-degree murder in the shooting of a 16-year-old acquaintance, county police said.

William Jacks Jr., of the 1200 block of Marlboro Road, is accused of driving April Ward to a secluded area on Loch Haven Road after picking her up at her job at Wendy's, robbing her, then shooting her once in the chest shortly before 11 p.m. Saturday.

After she fell, the gunman stood over her with his gun drawn before fleeing when a car approached, police said.

Ms. Ward, whose address police did not release, was in fair condition at Prince George's Trauma Center yesterday, officials said. The bullet struck her under her collarbone and went through her lung and out her back, police said.
