Chesapeake Biological Laboratories yesterday announced a strategic alliance with a California firm to develop, manufacture and distribute generic injectable pharmaceuticals.

With headquarters in Owings Mills and a plant in the Seton Industrial Park in Baltimore, CBL brings experience in manufacturing to its deal with Pasadena Research Laboratories Inc. of San Clemente, Calif. PRL brings a distribution network.

CBL is looking for city and state help to add a 55,000-square-foot facility to its existing 15,000 square-foot building at Seton Park, said Chief Financial Officer Jack Janssen. Most of the added space would be for manufacturing, but the firm also would be able to consolidate office and warehouse space now in Owings Mills.

When the new facility is completed in about two years, Mr. Janssen said, CBL could increase its work force by 30 or 40 people from the current 60.

The companies have identified a series of drugs -- with an estimated annual market of $1 billion -- for which patents have expired or will expire soon. Production of the new generic drugs could begin in existing space.
