James L. Watson, 65, a senior editor at The Associated Press until his retirement in 1995, died yesterday of a heart attack in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Mr. Watson had been a principal editor of feature copy at AP's International Desk in New York. Born in Woonsocket, S.D., he graduated from Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, S.D., and worked for the Daily Republic newspaper there.

He then worked in insurance in San Francisco and New York and lived for eight years in Spain before going to work for AP in Sioux Falls in the late 1960s.

Mr. Watson wrote three novels and was planning to continue writing in retirement.
