Three units are damaged in $2,000 fire at apartments

A sprinkler system helped prevent an Elkridge apartment fire from spreading Tuesday night, but three apartment were damaged, county fire officials said yesterday.

The fire began about 11:15 p.m. at the Windsor at Pine Ridge Apartments in the 7100 block of Ducketts Lane. No one was at home in the apartment unit where the fire began.

The blaze caused fire, smoke and water damage to a third-floor apartment, said Lt. David Carroll, spokesman for the Department of Fire and Rescue. Two apartments on the second floor sustained water damage, he said.

The two families in the damaged second-floor units were placed in other apartments by Pine Ridge management while the electrical system dries out, said fire Chaplain George Grimm.

The family living in the apartment where the fire originated had not been located, but also would probably receive a temporary ** apartment, he said.

Lieutenant Carroll said the fire loss was estimated at $2,000, a figure that could have been higher without a sprinkler system.

Firefighters from five stations responded to the fire, which was contained in the living room next to the fireplace, he said.

The fire is under investigation by the state fire marshal's office.
