For the second year in a row, Severna Park shops and stores will stay open until midnight tonight to try to pump up holiday sales.

Most of the businesses in the Severna Park Village Shopping Center and Park Plaza are taking part in "Midnight Madness," said Linda Zahn, executive director of the Greater Severna Park Chamber of Commerce.

"You can go Christmas shopping any night," said Ms. Zahn, whose organization is sponsoring the event. "But why not go shopping on a night when the stores are open late and a lot of entertainment will be around?"

Entertainment will be provided at the Severna Park Village Shopping Center and at Park Plaza.

The Talent Machine of Annapolis, a theatrical group, will perform Park Plaza at 7 p.m. and at the Village Center at 7:30 p.m. Girl Scout Troop 1092 will sing holiday carols at Park Plaza at 7:30 p.m. and at the Village Center at 8 p.m.

Santa Claus will appear at Park Plaza at 6 p.m.

"It reinforces a sense of community," Ms. Zahn said. "It's something we're missing in this world. We support a harmonious relationship with the community. And we hope the community will support local business."
