Indy Racing League: Named Johnny Rutherford special projects coordinator.


Pirates: Avoided arbitration with IF Nelson Liriano by agreeing to a two-year contract.

Reds: Named Tommy Thompson manager and Andre Rabouin pitching coach of Single-A Charleston, W.Va.

Rockies: Extended contract of GM Bob Gebhard through 1999 and appointed him executive VP. Announced that the contract that All-Star 3B Vinny Castilla agreed to Monday was for $1 million this season and $2 million next season.

Twins: Sent P Mike Trombley outright to Triple-A Salt Lake.

White Sox: Sent C Chris Tremie outright to Triple-A Nashville.


NBA: Named SuperSonics F Shawn Kemp Player of the Week.

Rockets: Signed G Clyde Drexler to a multi-year extension.


Patriot League: Named Navy sophomores Becky Dowling and Eddie Lucas basketball Players of the Week.

Hawaii: Fired football coach Bob Wagner, who coached the Rainbows to their only two bowl games during his nine years but had two successive losing seasons.

Oklahoma State: Suspended TB Andre Richardson, WR Terrance Richardson and DL Jamal Williams for violating team policy.


Buccaneers: Signed WR-KR Marvin Marshall to the practice squad.

Jaguars: Signed DE Bronzell Miller from Rams practice squad. Released QB Brad Goebel.

Packers: Claimed QB Jim McMahon on waivers from Browns. Released RB LeShon Johnson.

Panthers: Signed DL Jeff Fields from Redskins practice squad. Placed DE Mark Thomas on IR.


Bruins: Sent G Blaine Lacher to AHL Providence on conditioning assignment.

Devils: Sent D Ricard Persson to AHL Albany. Recalled D Cale Hulse from Albany.

Lightning: Recalled D Bob Halkidis from IHL Atlanta.

Mighty Ducks: Recalled C Sean Pronger on emergency recall from AHL Baltimore.

Stars: Signed C Lee Jinman, second-round pick in 1993 draft, to three-year contract. Recalled F Bill Huard from IHL Michigan.

Whalers: Recalled F Scott Daniels from AHL Springfield. Placed F Paul Ranheim on seven-day IR.

Rochester (AHL): Announced that G Olie Sundstrom has been recalled from loan by ECHL Erie.


International Swimming Federation: Extended from two to four years a mandatory ban on first-time steroid users. Swimmers who test positive for banned substances will lose all medals, victories and accomplishments in the preceding 12 months.
