Shopping tip that takes the cake

Getting "malled" while trying to finish your holiday shopping? Take time out for a cup of tea and a slice of cake from the new Sweet Indulgence shop in Towson Town Center. The shop also offers luscious gift ideas: Christmas gift box cakes ($30-$40), chocolate sleighs that can be filled with cookies or candy ($29.95) and gingerbread houses ($25 and $60). The shop, on the second level, is open from 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

If your cookies are spreading all over the pan, or you've lost a favorite pie recipe, help is at hand. Call the General Mills Holiday Hot Line from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. Call (800) 793-0464.

Spicy notes

Got some hot heads on your Christmas card list? They'd surely appreciate a "chili card" from Mo Hotta Mo Betta, the catalog of all things hot and spicy. The card has a biodegradable wrapper imbedded with chili seeds. Plant it and pepper plants will grow. Cards cost $4.25 each. To order, or to get a catalog, call (800) 462-3220.

Baking by the book

"Holiday Baking" by Jeanne Thiel Kelley (Time-Life Books, $17.95) is the latest in the series of more than two dozen cookbooks from the Williams-Sonoma Kitchen Library. Recipes range from basics such as pastry and frosting to scones, tarts and pies. Available at stores, or direct from Time-Life at (800) 277-8844.
