Wisconsin QB Bevell upgraded to fair condition

Wisconsin quarterback Darrell Bevell's condition was upgraded to fair at University Hospital in Madison.

Bevell, a fifth-year senior who set 17 school passing records, bruised a kidney in Saturday's game with Illinois. He was moved out of intensive care yesterday morning. Bevell played most of the 3-3 tie even though he was shaken up early when he took a shot to the ribs.

Galbraith, Connell win $1,105,000 World Doubles

Left-handed tennis players Patrick Galbraith of the United States and Grant Connell of Canada defeated Jacco Eltingh and Paul Haarhuis of the Netherlands, 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (8-6), 3-6, 7-6 (7-2), to win the $1,105,000 World Doubles Championship in Eindhoven, Netherlands.

Volleyball: World champion Italy beat the Netherlands, 13-15, 15-6, 15-8, 15-3, improving its record to 6-0 and keeping the sole lead in the 12-nation men's World Cup in Sendai, Japan. Brazil (5-1), winner of the 1992 Olympics, is second on the basis of sets won and Japan (5-1) third.

Golf: Nick Price of Zimbabwe, the world's second-ranked player, shot a final-round 65 to win the $111,110 Zimbabwe Open in Harare by one stroke over Brenden Pappas of South Africa. Price never had won his home country's open.
