Padgett Business Services offers $500 scholarship

High school seniors who are children of business owners are eligible to apply for a $500 scholarship offered by Padgett Business Services.

Applicants must be high school seniors who plan to attend a post-secondary accredited institution.

The legal guardian of the student must be an active owner of at least 10 percent of stock or capital in a local business that employs fewer than 20 people.

Regional winners will be eligible for a grand prize scholarship of $4,000.

The deadline for applying is March 1.

The local award is part of an international program in which Padgett Business Services is offering more than $25,000 in scholarships throughout the United States and Canada.

Awards are based on test scores, grade point averages and education and career plans.

Local winners will be announced in May. The grand prize will be awarded in June.

Catholic students may get information on scholarships

Fliers describing application procedures for the Marion Burk Knott Elementary and Secondary Scholarships are available to Catholic students in grades four through eight.

Students must live in and belong to a Catholic parish in Baltimore or Baltimore, Carroll, Anne Arundel, Howard, Harford or Frederick counties to be eligible.

The four-year, full-tuition scholarships are awarded primarily for academic achievement.

The elementary-school scholarships cover tuition for grades five through eight at the student's parish elementary school. The secondary-school scholarships pay high school tuition at a Catholic high school in the city or those counties.

To obtain a flier, mail a stamped, self-addressed business-size envelope to: The Marion Burk Knott Scholarship Fund, St. Mary's Seminary and University, 5400 Roland Ave., Baltimore, Md. 21210-1929.

This year, the scholarship fund will award one four-year, full-tuition scholarship to each of the three Catholic colleges in Maryland: Mount St. Mary's College, Loyola College and the College of Notre Dame.

These scholarships are available to Catholic students in grade 12 who demonstrate outstanding academic promise.

Applicants should contact the colleges for additional information and application procedures.
