A car crossed a center traffic line on U.S. 1 in Jessup and crashed into a van Saturday, critically injuring the car's driver and closing a busy intersection for three hours, Howard County traffic police said.

The car's driver, Reginald Fowler, 30, of the 13000 block of Clarksville in Highland, was listed in critical condition at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore last night. A passenger in the car, James E. Butler, 40, of the 3800 block of Wabash Ave. in Baltimore, was treated and released from the trauma center late Saturday, police said.

The van's driver, Thomas William Smith Jr., 35, of the 1900 block of E. Lombard St. in Baltimore, was treated at Laurel Regional Hospital and released Saturday, police said.

Mr. Fowler's southbound Chevrolet Corsica crossed the double yellow traffic lines about 6:15 a.m. Saturday and hit Mr. Smith's northbound Ford Econoline van at the Cedar Avenue intersection, police said. Police said charges could be filed after an investigation.
