Key loses its first match in finals 1A volleyball

Williamsport, which had gone through the state playoffs at Catonsville Community College last season in a loss against Clear Spring, appeared right at home yesterday against No. 6 Francis Scott Key, which was making its first trip in the finals.

The Wildcats (15-3) avenged a regular-season sweep by the Eagles, earning their seventh state title with a 15-11, 15-13, 11-15, 15-7 win over an Eagles team that lost for the first time this season.

Kim Reid and Misty Myers did a fine job blocking against Key's big hitter Stephanie Stambaugh and the Wildcats mixed it up offensively to keep the Eagles off-balance.

"You've got to play your game and we didn't," said Key coach Leo Totten.

"It's not a good way to end the season, but you can't take away the success we had. The one last step didn't quite happen."
