Schools set policy on emergency closings Notice will be given by 6:45 a.m. on snow days

Carroll County school officials have announced the Board of Education's policy for the emergency closing of schools.

If schools must be closed for the entire day because of inclement weather, the announcement will be made no later than 6:45 a.m. on these radio and television stations:

WTTR-AM and cable Channels 3 and 21 (Westminster); WHVR-WYCR (Hanover, Pa.); WGET-WGTY (Gettysburg, Pa.); WFMD and WZYQ/WQSI (Frederick); WTHU (Thurmont); WBAL, WCAO, WPOC, WCBM, WVRT, WQSR, WERQ, WRBS, WMIX, WLIF, WGRX, WMAR-TV, WJZ-TV and WNUV-54 (Baltimore); WMAL, WTOP and WJLA-TV (Washington); WCHR (Williamsport); WKDB (Silver Spring); WUSA, Fox Channel 5; and WJEJ/WWMD (Hagerstown).

If the weather forces schools to open an hour or more late, the notification will be made by the same time and on the same stations.

If schools open an hour late:

* Morning kindergarten and the career and technology, PREP, Early Intervention Kindergarten (EIK), Extended Elementary Education Program (EEEP) and Head Start programs will be shortened by one hour.

* Afternoon kindergarten and career and technology programs will be on their regular schedule.

If schools open more than an hour late:

* Morning kindergarten, career and technology, PREP, EIK, EEEP and Head Start programs will be canceled.

* Afternoon kindergarten and career and technology programs will be on their regular schedule.

If inclement weather develops while students are in school, the Board of Education will announce on designated radio and TV stations whether students will be dismissed one, two or three hours early.

If schools close one hour earlier than usual (decision to be made by 12:15 p.m.):

* Morning career and technology programs will be on their regular schedules.

* Afternoon career and technology programs will be shortened by one hour.

* Morning kindergarten will be on its regular schedule.

* Afternoon kindergarten will be shortened by one hour.

* Morning PREP and EIK programs will be on their regular schedules.

* Afternoon PREP and EIK will be shortened by one hour.

* EEEP and Head Start programs at Carrolltowne Elementary, Elmer Wolfe Elementary, Robert Moton Elementary, Taneytown Elementary and William Winchester Elementary will be shortened a half-hour.

* BEST program students will be transported to the Carroll Springs School at 1:15 p.m. (leaving Francis Scott Key High). Students will transfer to special-needs buses serving the area where they live.

If schools close two hours earlier than usual (decision by 11:15 a.m.):

* Morning career and technology programs will be on their regular schedules.

* Afternoon career and technology programs will be canceled. Students will remain in home schools or be returned from the Career and Tech Center with the morning students.

* Morning kindergarten program enrollees will remain for dismissal at the home elementary school.

* Afternoon kindergarten program will be canceled.

*Morning PREP and EIK will be on their regular schedules.

* Afternoon PREP and EIK will be canceled.

* EEEP and Head Start programs at Carrolltowne Elementary, Elmer Wolfe Elementary, Robert Moton Elementary, Taneytown Elementary and William Winchester Elementary will be shortened two hours.

* EEEP and Head Start programs at Westminster Elementary and Runnymede Elementary will be shortened by one hour.

If schools close three hours earlier than usual (decision by 10:15 a.m.):

MA * Morning career and technology program will be on their regu

lar schedule.

L * Afternoon career and technology programs will be canceled.

* Morning kindergarten program enrollees will remain for dismissal at the home elementary school.

* Afternoon kindergarten program will be canceled.

* Morning PREP and EIK students will remain at school and be dismissed with special-needs runs.

* Afternoon PREP and EIK will be canceled.

* EEEP and Head Start programs at Carrolltowne Elementary, Elmer Wolfe Elementary, Robert Moton Elementary, Taneytown Elementary and William Winchester Elementary will be shortened three hours.

* EEEP at Westminster Elementary and Runnymede Elementary will be shortened by two hours.

Students and parents are urged not to call television or radio stations or the Board of Education office to inquire about school closings and bus service because such calls hinder the handling of announcements.
